Top 5 Fantasy Books I Want to Read

With school readings in university, I don’t get around to reading much fantasy. Now that I’ve graduated, I’m really excited to get around to these 5 fantasy books that have been sitting on my TBR shelf for way too long!

The Queen of the Tearling, by Erika Johansen

This book has been talked about time and time again on BookTube with raving reviews. The story centers on Princess Kelsea Raleigh Glynn, who was raised in exile. She embarks on a perilous journey back to her kingdom of birth to take her rightful throne. Of course, there are trials along the way, including enemies and an evil sorceress possessed of dark magic.

I’ve owned this book for over a year now, and I think it’s about time that I finally read it!

I bought this book on Book Outlet a while ago without knowing much about it. It was more of a purchase influenced by reviews on BookTube. This is a YA fantasy book about Amani Al’Hiza, a poor, orphaned, gifted gunslinger from the backcountry town of Dustwalk. She dreams of leaving Dustwalk, but never found an opportunity until she meets Jin, a foreigner, in a shooting contest.

This fantasy includes magic and mythical creatures, and it seems like something I’m really going to enjoy!

Tower of Dawn, by Sarah J. Maas

I couldn’t believe my luck when I found this book at a Goodwill bookstore for $3 the other week! I held off getting this book when it was released last year; Chaol was never my favorite character in the Throne of Glass series, so I didn’t feel like spending $20+ for a book that only centers on his story and not Aelin and Rowan. But when I found it at Goodwill, it was the perfect opportunity to continue the series and save quite a few bucks!

This is the 6th book in the Throne of Glass series, so I can’t really say much about it without spoiling the other previous books. This series is phenomenal and one of my favorite fantasy series by far!

If you haven’t read The Bone Season, you should get on that! This fantasy series is so captivating, and I’ve loved both The Bone Season and The Mime Order. I have own the third installment for some time now, but I haven’t been able to read it either from being busy or just not having the courage to dive back into this story. Again, because this is the third book of a series, I’m not going to go into the synopsis. The series on a whole focuses on Paige Mahoney, a clairvoyant whose powers are outlawed in her futuristic London.

The Star-Touched Queen, by Roshani Chokshi

This is another fantasy book that I don’t know very much about. It’s been hyped up all over BookTube, so I bought it a while ago. The story is about Maya, who is cursed with a horoscope that promises death and destruction. Maya is more focused on scholarly pursuits, but all of that is changed when her father, the Raja, arranges her marriage with Amar from Akaran to quell political rebellions. Maya is faced with unraveling an ancient mystery in order to save those she loves the most.

Hello Again! and ACOWAR

Image result for acowar

I feel so bad I’ve been so MIA; this semester has really destroyed and exhausted me. But now that I’m going into the last week of the semester, I am sooooooo excited to start reading for fun again!!

To start up my reading again, I picked up A Breath of Snow and Ashes, by Diana Gabaldon because I’m really eager to get back into the Outlander world again, but HELLO!!! It’s May, and that means A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas, A.K.A., a book I’ve been waiting a YEAR for, was released on May 2, so I had to put Gabaldon down immediately. I’m only a couple chapters into ACOWAR, but I am so ready to be destroyed by this book. It’s the last book in the series (though Maas mentioned she’ll be writing more books set in the Prythian world, thank God), so I’m excited to see how everything wraps up with these beloved characters.

If you haven’t read anything by Sarah J. Maas or have never read the ACOTAR (A Court of Thorns and Roses) series, GO READ NOW! She has amazing high-fantasy novels that will immerse you in their worlds and connect you so deeply with their characters. Plus, the fan art for both of her series are AMAZING.

I’m glad to be back on here, and I hope to be A LOT more active from now on.

Reading Update: Sarah J. Maas Will be the Death of Me

My baby for the next few hours before work. SJM kills me with her stories. 😩💕
#sjm #tog #queenofshadows #currentlyreading #bibliophile #books #bookstagram #bookrecs #read #reading #book #booklover #bookworm #throneofglass #slay #rowaelin #love

I think I have come to the point where it’s safe to say that Sarah J. Maas is going to kill me. Her stories are so immersive, and I’ve been completely lazy and unproductive the past two weeks as I’ve been devouring Heir of Fire and now Queen of Shadows.

I CAN’T GET ENOUGH

And honestly…

Rowan.

That is all.

I’ve fallen completely in love with the Throne of Glass series. It took me a while to jump onto the wagon of this fandom, and I still wasn’t sure after the first book, but OMG I’m in love now.

Most have read this series, and most agree and understand how much I’ve been dying these past weeks. But if you haven’t read this series, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?! GO TO THE BOOKSTORE RIGHT NOW.

I feel like I’m so completely wrapped up in this story that I don’t want anything to do with my reality at the moment (aside from my lovely husband, of course). I’m constantly thinking about the story and the characters, even when I’m not actively reading the book. I can’t recommend this series enough. SJM really knows how to weave an intricate and enthralling tale. She does it in the Throne of Glass series and one my all-time favorites, the A Court of Thorns and Roses series.

READ THEM NOW!

Okay, I’m going to get back to reading now!

December TBR!

For the past few months, I’ve made monthly TBR’s and completely ignored them for the entire month. I blame school. But this month, I’m really going to try to stick to a TBR and set reading goals for myself. So below is a brief TBR list for the month of December.

  • A Torch Against the Night, by Sabaa Tahir (currently reading)
  • American Born Chinese, by Gene Luen Yang
  • Heir of Fire, by Sarah J. Maas
  • (I’m thinking of re-reading The Wrath & the Dawn and The Rose & the Dagger)
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, by J.K. Rowling
  • Daughter of Smoke and Bone, by Laini Taylor
  • Across the Universe, by Beth Revis

Reading Update: Crown of Midnight

Image result for crown of midnight

I finally finished Crown of Midnight, by Sarah J. Maas. I had to take a little break from reading because I had to start another book for university. But now that it’s Thanksgiving break, I actually have an opportunity to get to the things I’ve been wanting to do like finish this book! As much as I love this world and the many different characters,  Celaena really started to irritate me in this book.

Without giving away any spoilers, Celaena goes through something that makes her question whether she can trust certain people, and I just felt like at a certain point it just started getting old. The way she thinks sometimes and the things that she does are the types of things that makes the audience say, “no, don’t go in there. Don’t do that. Nooooo!!” It’s like come on, girl listen reason.

Despite these reservations, I did really enjoy that the plot is thickening and building up the conflict concerning the queen. I look forward to reading Heir of Fire, but I think I’m going to take a break from the Throne of Glass series and read something else.

Overall, I rate this book 3.5 stars.

Speaking of stars, I plan to read These Broken Stars, by Amie Kaufman next!

(Mini) Book Review: FINISHED TOG

Image result for throne of glass

I finished Throne of Glass, and I have to admit that I am absolutely HOOKED.

Thank goodness I already own Crown of Midnight and Heir of Fire, so now I can marathon-read them!

I love the world and the characters within it. I’m so curious to unfold all of the mysteries that Sarah J. Maas packs within this book. I want to find out more about Celaena’s past and her suppressed memories. I want to figure out what the heck the king is up to, and why Celaena has such a weird reaction around him. I want to see more of her and Chaol (and Dorian obvi) and how that will all play out.

AHHHH I need to be home already so I can cozy up in bed and dive into Crown of Midnight!
